BASIC STEPS ON HOW TO SKETCH. FASHION ILLUSTRATION
LEARN HOW TO SKETCH.
Note by Evelyn Umeh.
Introduction
To start sketching, you would need a pencil (H hard lead
pencils preferably), sketch book and quality eraser. In sketching, note that you should make light
marks on your sketching paper instead of pressing too hard on the paper so that
you would find it easy to clean once there’s a mistake. Do not use pen. It is highly unacceptable and
as such, not advisable because you won’t be able to erase where there’s
alteration.
You would need colored markers, ink or paint to color your
sketch in order to give your illustration a good finishing by the use of well
details, trimmings, buttons, etc. I have also come across sketches and
illustrations that are colored with the use of makeup kits; it is all about
your creativity.
First Stage to Sketching Your Croquis.
STAGE 1
Croquis are considered to be the skeletal representation of
your model. There are different ways and poses of sketching a croquis, there
are standing, bending, sitting, walking… but as a beginner, let’s take you to
the basic and easy way to sketch which is the standing pose.
1: BEGIN WITH THE
HEAD
First draw a head oval in shape like this which is 3cm long
using the your ruler to be sure of the head size.
2: Add the neck
Add the neck area to the head of your croquis by using your
ruler to mark a straight line of 1cm from the chin part of the head down.
3: Draw the shoulder
Draw a horizontal line of 6cm along the neck area which you
have drawn down from the chin area of your head.
4: Draw the waistline
From the neck area, i.e, the starting line of the neck,
using your ruler, mark 6cm vertically down on your paper and draw a straight
vertical line of 3cm. Follow the picture samples for better understanding. Note
that the waist is the smallest part of the body.
5: Draw the hips line.
Next, again, starting from the neck area, mark out 9cm and
draw a horizontal line of 6cm (this is a standard hip for basic learner. Note
also that fashion illustrators exaggerate the hip of their croquis to give the
illustration on the model a fine look. Which means, as you practice more and you progress, you can do better).
6: Draw the knee line
The knee line introduces the legs which is the longest part
of the body. It is measured about 3 heads which is up to 9cm long. The knee
line should be drawn horizontally of about 2cm and 6cm from the hips line down.
